EXERCISE


THE ENVELOPE

The man was extremely tired and hungry,had too many debts and was so poor that he had no money to buy himself anything to eat.So,he decided to commit suicide. After some minutes of hesitation he locked the door,closed the windows and turned on the gas.Then he lay on his bed to wait for the effects. As he lay on the bed,his hand touched something. It was an envelope. He began to open it, but his eyes closed and very soon he was asleep.

He had a dream, and in his dream he received an envelope which contained a check for an amount enough to, pay all his debts and still be a rich man. After this pleasant dream he remebered nothing more and slept peacefully all night.

Next morning some boys started making a loud noise somewhere, so he woke up. He evidently wasn't dead yet. He felt his pulse. It was normal. He felt his heart. It was still beating! He had no headache. He looked around to see if there was someone in the room. There was no one there except him. Then he saw the envelope. There wasn't any check inside. Instead he found a letter with a few lines informing him that as he had not paid his bill,the gas company had cut off his gas!

Why does everybody study English?
What makes it a global language?
English is the language that facilitates communication in thousands of individual contacts made daily all over the world.It is used in air,land and sea communication,in information technology,sports,TV,movies,science,politics,music...English is necessary to surf and chat on the Internet,to e-mail people around the world,to read international books,magazines,annoucements,ads,song lyrics,instructions,manuals,scientific journals,etc. The following graph shows the use of English all over the world.

1.The inner circle - places where Englich is the first language:the USA,Great Britain,Ireland,Canada,Australia and New Zealand.
2.The outer circle - countries where English is used as a second language:Singapore,Índia,Malawai,and over fifty other countries/territores.
3.The expanding circle - nations where the importance od English as an international language is recognised:China,Japan,Greece,Poland,Brazil and many others.

SIMPLE PRESENT I

Para formar o Simple Present coloca-se o verbo no infinitivo sem o to.
Ex: to live - live (I, you, we, they).

Nas terceiras pessoas do singular, o verbo recebe S.
Ex: live - lives (he, she, it).

Esse tempo expressa:
. ações habituais. Ex: I always listen to the radio. Utiliza-se, geralmente, advérbios de tempo como: often, frequently, always, usually, sometimes, never, every day, on Sundays etc.
. fatos. Ex: I live in Salvador.
. verdades universais. Ex: Birds fly.
. ações futuras relacionadas com horário anteriormente fixado. Ex: My sister arrives tonight.

SIMPLE PRESENT II

As terceiras pessoas do singular dos verbos em geral recebem S.
Ex: work - works arrive - arrives play - plays

Entretanto, nos verbos terminados em ss, sh, ch, x, z, o, acrescenta-se ES.
Ex: go - goes kiss - kisses watch - watches

Se o verbo finalizar em Y precedido de consoante, troca-se o Y por i e acrescenta-se ES.
OBS:
Irregularidade: o verbo HAVE - HAS. Ex: She has a house.
